Our country won its political freedom in 1947, after a strenuous struggle under the
leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. For two centuries, we were ruled by the British and
our natural resources were exploited to their own advantage. The two World wars
coupled with medium and major famines, notably the Bengal famine in 1943 which
claimed many lakhs of human lives, further crippled our economy.
