Intellectual property is the foundation of all technology ventures, yet the laws governing and protecting Intellectual property rights are unfamiliar territory for most scientists. At international level, Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) have traditionally been governed by several conventions- most prominently the Paris Convention for Patents and Trade Marks (1883) and the Berne Convention for Copy Rights (1886)- which are administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights Agreement 1994 represents the most far reaching agreement towards global harmonization of Intellectual Property Rights. Nanotechnology is a young field that focuses on basic research and material science product.
